The Department of Science and Technology is rolling out Science centres across the country in a bid to improve, Science and Maths results in schools. Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom has opened a R52 million science centre in Kuruman in the Northern Cape.
For most of the pupils in the area exploring the world of science was restricted to textbooks and the imagination. With no apparatus and adequate rescources, interest in science was almost non-existent. This impacted negatively on exam results, especially the grade 12's.
"You cannot expect good results in grade 12 only to find that there is no foundation in the lower classes," says school principal Tloumatsana Lesiba.
But that has all change. The science centre has opened a new world to pupils in this region. Pupils could not contain their excitement. "I am definitely going to learn more about physical science and maths. It’s going to help us a lot," says an excited pupils.
