Eighteen women donning red scarves will converge at the Mandela Square, on Tuesday in commemoration of the Mandela Day.

This is a stand for an African Girl Child Education through the Sisterhood of the red scarves campaign.

The project will see them raise funds for sanitary towels for rural and peri-urban girls, as well as for blankets.

Founder of the campaign Ndileka Mandela says through the campaign they are asking people to have more awareness and to also donate funds, “The government does donate some funds but if you look at the numbers, three million girls are affected in the Southern Africa and there is something that we have to do as active citizens to assist government and not always look at what government can do.”

“We live in a country where the face of poverty is female, where we wake up every day and a girl child misses on average 50 days of school per year,” says Basetsana Khumalo who is an ambassador of the campaign.
