The family of the ailing former president, Nelson Mandela, have told the SABC in an exclusive interview that Madiba is continuing to put up a courageous fight from his "deathbed".
According to his daughter, Makaziwe Mandela, the world’s icon continues to fight against the ailments ravaging him. Hope springs eternal for this celebrated family.
Makaziwe says, "Tata is still with us, strong, courageous. Even for a lack of a better word on his 'deathbed' he is teaching us lessons; lessons in patience, in love, lessons of tolerance. Every moment I get with him I’m amazed. There are times where I have to pinch myself that I come from this man who is a fighter even though you can see he is struggling, but fighting spirit is still there with him."
Madiba was admitted to the Pretoria Heart Clinic in June, where he was treated for a recurring lung infection before he released to receive home-based care nearly three months later.
At the time there was an outpouring of love and concern for the elder statesman. On Tuesday, however, it was quiet outside Madiba's Houghton home, where a slew of specialist physicians are attending to the frail 95-year-old’s health.
Grandchild, Ndaba Mandela has also lamented Madiba’s ill state. "He is still with us although he is not doing well in bed."
Earlier this year, the world's media staked the Pretoria hospital where Madiba was being treated. During his near three-months stay in hospital, earlier in 2013, global messages of support testified to Mandela’s global appeal and popularity.
