Paralympic and world champion sprinter Oscar Pistorius will appear on a charge of murder in the Pretoria Magistrates Court today. Police indicated that the state will oppose a bail application.
Pistorius was arrested yesterday at his house in the Silverwoods Country Estate east of Pretoria, after neighbours called the police when they heard gunshots. Thirty year-old model Reeva Steenkamp, Pistorius' girlfriend, was found dead at the scene. She was shot four times.
Murder is a schedule six offence and Pistorius' lawyers will have to prove exceptional circumstances during the bail hearing why he should be released on bail. The police were yesterday processing the scene at his house.
Pistorius was taken to the Boschkop police station where fingerprints and statements were taken. He was then taken to a district surgeon where he spent a few hours before being taken back to the police station.
Meanwhile, Pistorius' following continues to trend on Twitter this morning following the news of the shooting death of his girlfriend at his Pretoria home.
