Four people have died and 20 others sustained injuries when storms and lightning caused havoc at Harding in southern KwaZulu-Natal Thursday.

Provincial Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie says the four died in hospital after they had been struck by lightning.

He says all the injured were treated at the scene before being transported to hospital for medical care.

The storm left houses destroyed and roofs being blown.

Meanwhile, the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works says it has re-opened the south side of Chapman's Peak Drive in Cape Town to cyclists and pedestrians.

They will be able to use the scenic road between Hout Bay and Kommetjie from Friday. Restrictions have been in place for nearly a year following devastating fires in March last year.

The fires destroyed the vegetation above the road and increased the risk of rock and stone falls.
