Four men convicted of murdering 19-year-old lesbian, Zoliswa Nkonyana, in 2006 will be sentenced in the Khayelitsha Regional Court on the Cape Flats today. Nkonyana was stoned and stabbed to death outside a shebeen, allegedly because she was lesbian. She died a few metres from her home.

Mbulelo Dama, Lubabalo Ntlabathi, Sicelo Mase and Luyanda Londzi, were convicted of Nkonyana's murder last year.

On Monday, NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said: “The arguments were finalised as the state recall for a minimum sentence of 15-years. The sentence is based on that the accused did not even show remorse and they committed a hinius crime.  They killed Zoliswa Nkonyana because she was lesbian.”

The case provoked outrage among activists when it was postponed several times in the past.

Before the incident, Triangle Angle - an NGO that fights for the rights of gay and lesbian people in Khayelitsha, had recorded 15 incidents of violence against lesbians in Western Cape. It also recorded 12 other incidents after the death of Nkonyana.
