Residents of Zamdela in Sasolburg have turned on the police, attacking the police station in ongoing violence in the area.
SABC radio reporter, Noma Bolani is in the area and says she was moved to the police station for her own safety in the volatile situation.
Protestors however started attacking the police station itself, forcing the Zamdela police to call in reinforcements. Protestors were trying to burn down police vehicles outside the police station.
Public Order Police were earlier firing rubber bullets and using water cannons in a bid to avoid further violence. Police helicopters have been seen flying over the area.
Residents are protesting the incorporation of the Sasolburg municipality into that of Parys and yesterday went on the rampage in the area, looting hardware shops, liquor stores, and shops belonging to foreign nationals.
