The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) has told the SABC to withdraw its decision not to broadcast visuals of violent protests.

The announcement was made at a briefing in Sandton on Monday.

Civil society organisations, including Right to Know (R2K) and the SOS Coalition had lodged a complaint with Icasa saying the SABC's decision was in violation of its role as public broadcaster.

The SABC Board chairperson Prof Mbulaheni Maguvhe is required to write to Icasa within a week to confirm the broadcaster's reversal of the decision.

Meanwhile, the SABC board chair is expected to hold a media briefing in Auckland Park shortly.
