The Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office-Bearers has recommended a 5.5% increase for their salaries for the 2012 and 2013 financial year. The increase does not include other benefits and perks.

The commission briefed the media in Parliament on its recommendation for salary adjustments.  The increase will lift President Jacob Zuma's annual salary to R2.6 million and his deputy's toR2.3 million.

“The commission has made its recommendations, being obliged by the statutory enactment to make recommendation for the salary adjustment of public office-bearers. After taking into account all relevant stakeholders as it has been articulated and have been mentioned here, we have settled to propose the recommendation for 2012 and 2013 at 5%,” says Commissioner Pearl Sithole.

In 2006 and 2007, the recommendation adjusted all office-bearer’s salary by 5.7%, 6.5% in 2008 and 2009. Then spiking upwards again in 2010 with 8%, declining in the 2011/2012 fiscal year, it declined to 5%.
