Oscar Pistorius will plead not guilty to a charge of pre-meditated murder. His agent says the paralympian is disputing the murder charge against him in the strongest possible terms.

Pistorius was today charged with shooting dead his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. The state believes they have a strong enough case to prove that Pistorius planned the murder. He will spend the weekend in the Brooklyn police station's holding cells in Pretoria until his next appearance in court on Tuesday.

The state believes they have a strong enough case against the Paralympic athlete, Pistorius that is why they charged him with premeditated murder.

The case has been postponed to give Pistorius's defence team time to gather evidence and consult with him before his bail hearing on Tuesday.

Spokesperson for the Department of Public Prosecution, Madupe Simasiko has denied that Pistorius is receiving preferential treatment. Simasiko says the NPA have agreed it is not preferential treatment it is actually fair to the accused so that he be given time so that he can make his defence like anyone and that did not oppose that based on that.

The parents of Steenkamp are meanwhile struggling to come to terms with their daughter's death. The media continues to camp outside their Seaview home outside Port Elizabeth. Neighbours and friends all shake their heads and are still in disbelief over the events in Pretoria yesterday, loyalty to the Steenkamp family is evident and no-one is prepared to talk about the tragedy.

Earlier in the day Reeva's dad Barry ventured into the garden with a small dog. Her family are well known in the horse racing industry in the city. Reeva herself was an avid horse woman until an accident which saw her sustain serious back injury. Her parents have given consent for the screening of the series of Tropika Island of Treasure tomorrow night on SABC. They want her to be remembered through her work.

A memorial service for Reeva Steenkamp will be held in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday. It is the same day that Pistorius is due to again appearing in a Pretoria court, charged with her murder.

Family member Michael Steenkamp has told the media outside the family home in Seaview, Port Elizabeth that they are overwhelmed by messages of support from around the world. He says her body will be flown back on the same day where she will be cremated at a private service. Steenkamp was shot dead inside Pistorius's Pretoria house yesterday.
