The KwaZulu-Natal government says it will take a while to finish the assessment of the damage that the devastating storms have caused as some insurance companies put it at R500 million.

The death toll from Tuesday's storm stands at 14.

More than 40 schools were also damaged as well as several health care institutions in and around Durban.

At Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Umlazi two people died when a wall collapsed.

Health MEC Sbongiseni Dlomo says medical equipment was also damaged.

Dlomo says six theaters were affected but when they went there there on Wednesday clean up operations were taking place.

This means they may be functional quite soon. "After the cleaning up, they must also do what they call infection control in theatres."

Department of Education Spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi says they are working on plans to accommodate matric learners whose schools were damaged as examinations are starting next week.

"There are schools that are closed, but some are partly in operation. Our infrastructural technical team is on the ground developing a plan as to how to accommodate learners moving forward, especially the nine high schools that are affected given the fact that we are starting the matric exams next week."
