Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu lashes at Amplats’ planned job shedding exercise. Speaking on SAFM current affairs, the minister says the way the process was handled indicates that this has been a plan of the mining company to cut jobs.
The minister says in terms of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) which governs the mining industry, Amplats contravened Section 52 of the PRDA regulation 26. She adds that the company is jeopardising its mining licence. For more on the interview, click on the video:
Responding to the minister, Amplats Chief Executive Officer Chris Griffiths quelled reports that the mining company has been arrogant on how it went about handling the restructuring process.
He says once a company contemplates retrenchments, it starts a consultation process with labour, which does not preclude further discussions with government, which need to be done.
