South Africa Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) and Discovery Health are hosting a one day workshop Tuesday in Sandton.

It's guest speaker is international guest speaker and one of the world's leading experts in this field; Prof Stefan Hofmann, from Boston University.

He will be speaking on how Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be used effectively in the treatment of illnesses such as obsessive compulsive disorder, social phobia, depression and anxiety.

Hofmann says CBT focuses on maladaptive thinking patterns and behaviours that keep emotional distress alive.

He says it's an effective form of treatment that is widely used in Europe and the US often as the first line of treatment. " Its just as effective as any powerful drug," says Hofmann.

Sadag chairperson Colinda Linde says CBT is not widely used in South Africa because most universities do not offer the cause.
