The University of the Western Cape has a new Centre  of Excellence in Food Security.

The center, a partnership between UWC and the University of Pretoria, will look at food security in South Africa. The multi institutional research project is expected to run for 15 years.

Director of the Centre of Excellence in Food Security, Professor Julian May, says the center will focus at how food is grown, what people are eating and what they should be eating.

“We are facing a real concern about food in the future, they estimate the world could feed about 8 billion people, based on the amount of land, water and energy,” says May.

South Africa is included in that calculation.

She says the population of the world will reach 9 billion by the year 2050, and “at some point we are going to run out of food”.

She adds that we South Africans need to find a way to deal with the issue before hand.
