The Southern African Pesticides' Forum says highly dangerous pesticides are still being used by farmers despite posing a significant health risk to consumers.

The forum says the use of such chemicals has been found to cause various chronic ailments in humans.

The forum is lobbying SADC countries to develop a legal framework to reduce the use of hazardous pesticides.

The forum’s chair, Loitseng Sebetwane, says people are not aware of the chromic effect.

"We often have cases of cancer, reproduction toxicity, but people do not associate these with highly hazardous pesticides because we have other ailments which act as confounding factors as such it's difficult for people to realize that."
