The founder of Initiative for Dedicated Upliftment Rape Survivors' Centre in Potchefstroom in the North West, Santi Britz has called on government to create a specialised unit for rape survivors.

Britz is a rape survivor who was attacked repeatedly in her home while her husband was in hospital.

She says giving out a statement to the police and being taken through rape examination process by a doctor is like being raped all over again.

“Every time the system fails us at the initial moment after the rape. The police do come out, but it’s not really a specialised unit that focuses on sexual offences or abuse. In my case, if I think back, the statement was very traumatic. The rape examination was like being raped. For the medical doctor it’s not like that, but for you as a victim, I mean it is the worst thing to again take off your clothes and that is what happens.”
