The South African Human Rights Commission says the increasing prominence of social media in South Africa is further complicating the country's efforts to address racism and other forms of discrimination.

The Commission is holding public hearings on racism in light of the recent racial comments made on social media.

The aim is to understand what constitutes racism and who should be held accountable in the context of social media.

Commissioner Angie Makwetla says it remains of concern that 22 years into our democracy, we still grapple with issues of racism, highlighting that there's still much to be done in the bigger subject of social cohesion.

She says, "Recent highly publicised incidents such as the Penny Sparrow, Justin van Vuuren, Chris Hart, Velaphi Khumalo and Methew Theunison point to the evolving challenges in addressing racism in contemporary South Africa."
