Gauteng Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa says all psychiatric patients will have been moved to suitable facilities by the end of this month.

This follows the order of the Health Ombudsman after his findings that almost 100 patients died at various unlicensed NGOs after they were moved from Life Esidimeni.

The Gauteng Health Department was initially given 45 days to remove all patients from the NGO's, but that deadline has since been extended.

Briefing the media in Johannesburg on Thursday, Ramokgopa says about 210 of the patients are yet to be moved.

"To date 592 mental health patients have been transferred to suitable facilities. I must also indicate that we also have been visiting several facilities. Last week Saturday, together with family members we visited the Cullinan Care & Rehabilitation Centre to satisfy ourselves that the patients were being treated well and were in good condition."
