Public Enterprises Minister, Malusi Gigaba has urged people to report illegal electricity connections and cable theft. Gigaba visited Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape today.

A self confessed ‘Izinyoka’ - a person who steals electricity says he has been doing illegal connections for years as there is no electricity in his shack.  The man says: "The reason why we steal electricity is because the government is ignoring us so we will continue stealing electricity until the government builds us RDP houses."

Gigaba interacted with residents, saying the country's power system is strained and that a delicate balancing act is all that is keeping the lights on.

"This is a problem we are dealing with through security forces in particular in mobilising communities. We need to make communities aware of the dangers and risk of the theft of electricity and cable theft," says Gigaba.

Electricity theft amounts to millions each year.
