Domestic workers have been encouraged to join the South African Domestic Service and Allied Workers Union (SADSAWU).

This has emerged at the Limpopo domestic workers' symposium in Polokwane.

Its main focus was to empower the workers by making them aware of their rights.

Remuneration, unfair treatment and dismissal ranked high on the agenda.

A domestic worker shares their experiences: "We came here to learn because some of our previous employers dismissed us without valid reasons and remuneration. I didn't know what my hourly rate was and that employers have no right to deduct money from our salaries for things like aprons."
