National Union of Mineworkers say the workers have agreed to go back to work from tonight but the union does not accept the non payment of workers for the duration of their absence.
About 12 000 miners have been on strike for over a week now. The media has been barred from entering the premises.
None of the workers would confirm whether they will return to work tonight or not. They are demanding that a monthly R69 deducted for a funeral policy be cancelled. They are also accusing the NUM of being in cahoots with employers to implement the funeral scheme. A series of meetings between the union and striking workers were held to resolve the issues.
The mine management says it has already lost millions since the stoppage.
Mine spokesperson Sven Lunsche says: “We made it clear from the beginning that it was an unlawful and unprotected strike. 'No work no pay' is a policy and the NUM accepted that from the beginning. If they are going to change that approach we have not got it yet, they have not approached us. We will deal with it as they come.”
NUM’s Lesiba Seshoka says: "The issue of 'no work no pay' is not acceptable to us. We want the company to pay fully its workforce and then we can then talk with management and the workers as to how we are going to compensate for the lost hours of work."
The mine management says it has already lost millions since the stoppage.
