A prominent member of the Reiger Park Taxi Association has been shot and killed at his home in Vosloorus on Gauteng's East Rand. Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo says the man's murder is believed to be related to a dispute between rival taxi associations over a new route.
Nxumalo confirms that there is taxi violence taking place in Vosloorus and at Reiger Park, with rivalling taxi organisations fighting over routes. But, he says they still don't know the cause of death or the shooting. Nxumalo further says police are still investigating and that no one has been arrested. He says it is unfortunate that there are no suspects.
Reiger Park residents say crime is becoming a huge challenge in their community.
Residents held a meeting the night before to try and seek solutions to a number of issues including gangsterism. Representatives of the Gauteng Community Safety Department and local police also attended the meeting. MEC Faith Mazibuko sent a delegation to try and help the community to deal with some of the challenges it is facing.
In just a week, three people have been shot and killed in what residents believe are incidents related to gangsterism. Mazibuko is expected to visit the area to address the crime problems. Her spokesperson, Thapelo Moiloa, said the MEC is going there to try and encourage the community to participate in crime reduction in the area.
