The town of Modimolle in Limpopo and its surrounding townships have been shut down by protesting residents.
They have barricaded the streets with burning tyres and rubble. Residents are protesting against lack of water in the area.
A large police contingent has been deployed to monitor the situation.
Hundreds of residents who are gathered at the municipal offices have forced shops and government offices to shut down.

Residents are accusing the municipality of failing to supply them with clean water.
They say the water that they are getting from water tankers is not suitable for human consumption.
Some residents who were dispersed by police who used rubber bullets have been rushed to HF Odendaal hospital. The situation remains tense.
Police spokesperson Ronel Otto has advised motorists to use the N1 highway instead of the R101. "They have blocked all the entrances and exists to Phakgameng, as well as R101."
