The half-naked body of 20 year old Katlego Sethuru from Vaalbank, Mpumalanga was found dumped on the side of the road in her home town earlier this week. It is alleged that Sekhuru was raped before her body and private parts were mutilated.

According to Acting Communications Officer Amatie Ramasobana at Vaalbank Police Station, the body of Sekhuru was in a “shocking” state when it was discovered.

“Her throat was cut off, her face and private parts were burnt and she had two wounds on her chest,” said Ramasobana.

Sethuru was last seen alive on Sunday morning when she told her cousin, Neo Masheke, that she was going to meet with her boyfriend at a nearby supermarket.

Ramasobane says efforts to track down the suspect (boyfriend)  and bring him for questioning have been fruitless.

“We have gone to his home countless times to no avail. But the search for him will continue vigorously.”

However, the victim’s sister, Linnet Masilela, has expressed disappointment at the police’s lack of communication.

She says the police have not communicated anything to the family since the incident.

Masilela says the family is already devastated about the incident and not knowing the details make it worse, adding that they have lost faith in the police.

“It is painful, I last saw her on Sunday. Identifying her body was painful. She had so many scratches and sustained severe injuries. It’s sad, we really don’t know what happened,” added Masilela.

The gruesome murder has also sparked a rare outburst of anger amongst community members.

Her death provoked outrage and sent shock waves to community leaders.

ANCWL Secretary in Ward 19, Sonia Makweng condemned the incident, saying action must be taken against such acts of “hostilities.”

“This is a disgrace to women and it has to stop. We are planning a mass meeting to speak out against such incidents.”

Makweng added that women in the community were not feeling safe “anymore,” even walking to the nearest shop.

Meanwhile, the gruesome murder has also sparked a rare outburst of anger amongst community members.

“What kind of a human being does something like this? It is so unbelievable,” said a community member Maselete Matsei.

Vaalbank Police are pleading to anyone with any formation that would assist in investigations to call 082 338 3737 / 072 777 9044.
