Zimbabwe's ruling Zanu -PF is considering taking over the remaining white-owned farms to resettle landless blacks. An internal report tabled at the party's annual conference recommends that 198 white-owned farms be Gazetted for appropriation to meet the continued demand for land in rural areas.
Party supporters will consider whether to adopt the recommendation at a conference which ends today. The report reveals that white farmers own an estimated 100 000 hectares of land in the country. Another 220 farmers are currently being prosecuted for failing to move from the designated properties. A former president of the body representing white farmers, Dion Theron, says the move will be disastrous for the country.
It has always been an agenda to get rid of all the whites
Theron says: “ It's disturbing but its not a surprise. Although there are a few people remaining on the farms they have never been guaranteed that they could stay. So personally for me no big surprise. We know that it has always been an agenda to get rid of all the whites. The consequences its not only about tomorrow or this crop. Its about next years crop and the recovery of agriculture as a whole. The long term impact is truly devastating for this country."
Recently the union representing white farmers in Zimbabwe has appealed to the government to intervene to stop what it called escalating violence as it mourned the brutal murder of one of its members. The attack revived fears of a push to evict remaining white farmers ahead of elections expected next year.
