Over 400 striking Samancor Chrome miners at Mooinooi in North West, who have been staging an underground sit-in, have agreed to come to the surface and they are demanding better wages.

Striking miners' spokesperson, Mametle Sebei, says a refusal by management to grant miners a permit to hold a meeting has forced workers to stage a sit-in.

"We have been trying to secure a permit to meet freely outside for the past two weeks without success. We have learnt from the latest update, from underground that management has switched off water, so many people have been without water since yesterday," says Sebei.

Mine management is to hold talks with their representatives on Monday.
