The Home Affairs Department has given the assurance that its offices across the country will operate normally on Monday. This follows after a proposed  strike over allowances for Saturday shifts was averted.

The Department says this will give it more time to negotiate with the unions. Under the new agreement reached on Thursday, workers on a Saturday shift will get the day off in the week.

The unions earlier accused the Department of acting unilaterally.

"The Department of Home Affairs withdraws the circular introducing the shift, that was dated  March 2, 2015. Also that all consequences that negatively impacted on the employees will be reviewed and reversed on good course show. Thirdly, we agreed that operations within the Department will revert to conditions that prevailed prior to the implementation of the circular including voluntary work on Saturdays. The trade unions withdraws their notice of intention to strike, the Department's Nkidi Mohoboko said.
