Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has officially opened the office of the Tax Ombudsman.
The office has been set up to review and address taxpayer complaints in disputes that have not been resolved between themselves and the South African Revenue Services (SARS).
Gordhan appointed Judge Bernard Ngoepe as Tax Ombudsman in October 2013. Ngoepe reports directly to the Minister and works closely with, but independently of, SARS.
The office's role is to address taxpayer complaints regarding service and procedural or administrative issues in their dealing with SARS.
Gordhan says that the Tax Ombudsman should serve as another layer of service which inspires taxpayer confidence in the administration of tax.
The Ombudman's service is open to all taxpayers; individuals and businesses. SARS Acting Commissioner Ivan Pillay says his office will do all it can to support the work of the Tax Ombudsman.
