People hailing Uber taxis have been warned to check that license plates correspond with those confirmed in cell phone messages before getting in.

A woman was earlier kidnapped and raped after getting into what she thought was an Uber taxi in Sandton.

Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo has confirmed the incident in Fourways, but says he cannot divulge any further information.

Uber spokesperson Samantha Allenberg says the company is in contact with the woman and her family.

According to a Facebook post, the woman was tied up, locked in the boot, and driven to an ATM.

She was forced to withdraw money, taken to a veld and raped.
