Organisers of this year’s SA Sports Awards, to be held on the evening of November 4 at the Sandton Convention Centre, have set aside R1 million plus a luxury car for the Sport Star of the Year.
As a result, members of the public have been urged to support their favourite stars by voting for them via SMS. The catch - voting members of the stand a chance of winning a 1Series BMW for simply voting. Voting lines will close on the day of the glitzy ceremony, November 4, at 12 noon.
Nominations for this year’s awards pit a myriad of athletes against each other, seven in total. Nominees include Hashim Amla, who was the Sports Star of last year’s awards. He played a key role in the Proteas’ participation in the World T20 International held recently in Sri Lanka.
Amla will face stern competition this year from Paralympics gold medallist Natalie Du Toit as well as from Oscar Pistorius who made history this year by being the first double amputee to compete in both the Olympics and Paralympics. Not to forget the man who brought the country’s first gold medal at the Olympics, Chad le Clos, is also in the running for the top prize.
Also making the list is an athlete who continues to defy age by sheer professionalism on the soccer pitch, Siyabonga Nomvethe. Then there is the queen of track, Caster Semenya and lastly Vernon Philander whose Cricketing exploits helped the Proteas to be top-ranked in their tour to England.

These athletes made it into the Top Seven list for the Sports Star of the Year category, voted for by ordinary South Africans. No doubt, sports stars are individuals who represent our nation’s pride, and the nominees for this year’s South African Sports Star of the Year have brought us some of our most memorable sporting moments in history.
They have ascended onto the world stage to win the hearts of millions across the globe and it is now time for the South African public to vote for their favourite Sport Star of the Year.
To vote, members are of the public simply need to SMS “SPORTS” followed by the Athlete’s corresponding letter (A-G) to 33617.
