Finance Deputy Minister Sfiso Buthelezi has denied claims of a so-called power-grab of the Treasury.

The Democratic Alliance has accused Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe of grabbing the powers of Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba and reducing Treasury to mere book-keepers.

This comes after Radebe outlined a mandate paper which identified spending priorities.

Gigaba himself has been accused of forcing changes and employing 17 of his favourites to key Treasury positions.

Buthelezi says, “I think people are just making too much out of this thing, the cabinet agreed on a mandate paper. The government realised that it needs to prioritise certain activities and programmes.”

“When you have got many of the ministers around, the tendency is to prioritise everything which falls within the department that’s when we decided we needed somebody above all of us and that's how the question of the minister in the presidency came in, that they should come up with a mandate paper and then those things are taken to national treasury.”

“By the way you can’t take away national treasury's powers because they are contained in the constitution so how do you do that,” He adds
