About 550 Gautrain commuters have paid fines amounting to more than R38 000 for breaching rules at stations.

In July, two sisters were detained by security guards and fined R700 for chewing gum at a train station.

Transport MEC, Ismail Vadi, disclosed this while answering questions at the legislature in Johannesburg.

The two sisters said they were not aware that chewing gum was not allowed on the Gautrain. They claim to have been detained by security guards for four hours before being released after signing a R700 penalty.

Vadi says he received a briefing from the Gautrain CEO on the matter and that he fully supports the action taken by the security guards.  He has warned commuters not to become rude, difficult or defiant, as action will be taken against them.

Vadi has denied reports that the sisters were detained for four hours saying they were instead detained for two and a half hours.

The Democratic Alliance says it is pleased to learn that the sisters were not an exception.
