Gauteng's Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has called on police to speedily investigate the murder of model Reeva Steenkamp. The model was shot dead in the Pretoria home of paralympian Oscar Pistorius early Thursday morning.
As a result, Pistorius will be charged with premeditated murder. Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee Jacob Khawe says he suspects it was a case of domestic violence and police should work speedily.
Khawe says reading all the papers, it seems there to be material evidence that this is not anything but a result of domestic violence. “And from our experience as a committee on such issues, the way this has happened is a demonstration that it has been going on and on and this was the final stage.”
Khawe further says the Pistorius case can be used as a fight against domestic violence. He says they want to use the Steenkamp case to call upon all women, including celebrities, rich women and academics because society believes people who abuse are generally less-off and therefore those who are better-off are not.
But Khawe says in their view as a Committee, “this demon affects all women and we want the police to focus on that matter and use it to expose all other celebrities.”
Pistorius has meanwhile asked a minister to pray for him in his Brooklyn police cell in Pretoria. Police sources say he was again emotional today and cried before his legal team, including Advocate Barry Roux and attorney Kenny Oldwage, arrived to talk to him. – Additional reporting by Sapa
