Four robbers who allegedly murdered a moulana in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg are still at large. Moulana Iqbal Hassan, the priest at the Masjid Siddique in extension 10 was stabbed on Sunday at his residence before his attackers made off with household appliances.
His wife and children were also in the house but were unhurt. Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela says they are investigating a case of robbery and murder.
Makhubela added that: “The man was stabbed at the back of his head . We learnt that the four men gained entry through the house and demanded money as well has the electric appliances inside the house. After stealing they fled the scene and we have opened a case of house robbery and murder. However, at the moment no one has been arrested. We are also appealing to the community to help us in terms of tracing these suspects.
Meanwhile, local residents are still in shock after the incident. They say Moulana Hassan was a well respected man who dilligently served the community.
Ridwaan Eshak from the monitoring organisation, Lenasia Crime Alerts says: “We are shocked and horrified. This is terrible that the respected gentlemen who we all know is subjected to this crime. There is a lot of anger as expected. However, there is also a sense of brotherhood, people are together with the family and I see a lot of people around us asking what can we do to solve this crime and to prevent it from happening again.”
