Tshwane residents divided over name changes

Divisions among residents of South Africa's capital have been very clear during the final round of public hearings on the proposed Pretoria/Tshwane name change.

These were finalized in the city's seven regions today. Representatives of the Tshwane Metro council gave a short presentation about the history, reasons and legal framework relating to the name change of the capital city.

Residents and organizations were then given the opportunity to give their views on the proposed name change. It became apparent very soon that the white residents objected to the name change, while the black residents supported it.

Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile will have the final say about the capital's official name.
