Another mining company in Rustenburg in North West has been hit by a workers' strike. More than 1 000 mine workers at Royal Bafokeng Platinum Mine at Rasimone outside Rustenburg have downed tools.
Striking workers who have terminated their membership with NUM are now demanding direct salary negotiations with mine management.
According to a SABC News crew at the scene, the workers are gathering outside the main entrances to the shaft. Workers have appointed seven members to negotiate on their behalf. They are allegedly demanding a R12 000 wage increase. Management has still not addressed the workers.
Meanwhile, the Worlds Number 1 platinum producer Anglo American Platinum said today it had received a wage increase demand from workers at a mine, raising the prospect that a labour dispute at fellow producer Lonmin could spread.
Amplats spokesperson Mpumi Sithole told Reuters the formal demand was handed in by workers, rather than by union representatives, at the Thembelani mine near Rustenberg. – Additional reporting by Reuters
