Legendary actor Joe Mafela dies

The 75-year-old producer, director and businessman died on Saturday evening.(SABC)

Legendary actor Joe Mafela, also a musician and songwriter for over 50 years, has died in a car crash in Johannesburg. His family says the crash happened on Saturday night.  

Condolences are pouring in. Mafela was born in the Venda area of what is now Limpopo province in 1942.

He made his acting debut in 1964 and in 1974, co-starred in South Africa's first black feature film, "Udeliwe" with Cynthia Shange.

His TV career took off in the 1980s with a starring role in the Zulu Language sitcom "Sgudi 'snaysi".   

In 1996, Mafela released his first music album with the title track 'Shebeleza'.  It became a huge success and was used as a theme song during the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996.

He was acting in 'Generations' at the time of his death.
