The Azanian People's Organisation (AZAPO) says Steve Biko's political philosophies have been forgotten. A handful of AZAPO supporters marched to the Kgosi Mampuru II Prison in commemoration of their slain leader and hero who died in police custody on September 12, 1977.

The march and visit to Biko's cell at the prison kick-started the commemoration of Steve Biko month. The Black Consciousness leader's life will be celebrated at numerous events which will take place nationally and internationally.

AZAPO deputy president Strike Thokoane says, "What the young people are saying is that this country is not liberated. This is the statement to say 1994 did not bring about liberation to our people. Our people were catapulted to offices so that they become premiers, presidents, MECs but the rest and the whole lot of our people are still suffering."

He adds, "If we are liberated … for instance we wouldn’t be stealing money from other people. If we are liberated we will not be building small hovel houses for our people."
