World Farmers' Organisation president, Theo De Jager has told the conference of the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network,( FANRPAN) in Durban that agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa has the potential to be a force to be reckoned with.

FANRPAN is one of the think-tanks that are lobbying for policies that will promote good nutrition in Africa.

De Jager says the future of farming belongs to the youth who speak to each other on Facebook and Whatsapp.

He used the example of a South African sheep farmer, who an American consultant told that they must create a demand for wool when they faced bankruptcy three years ago.

“The wool producers asked them - remember they are sheep farmers - how do we do that? And the advice was get a teenager or two with a smartphone or a tablet and get the hell out of their way. And we must get out of the way of the young farmers who do not think of themselves as peasants anymore. And then we must ensure that they have the kind of access to the market. They will find a way to produce what the market wants.”
