Anglo American Platinum Mine says no one was fatally injured when security guards and mine workers clashed at the Siphumelele mine in the Rustenburg area this afternoon.

The clash left 12 people injured when mine security tried to evacuate those trapped in their offices.

Spokesperson, Mpumi Sithole appealed to employees to remain calm and “respect the company’s dispute resolution process”.

The incident allegedly involved members of the Workers Committee and National Mine Workers shop stewards.

Sithole says: “Workers committee members are contesting NUM’s legitimacy at the mine and demanding that NUM vacate its offices.”

According to the company, they are currently in the process of validating union membership at Rustenburg and the mines north of the Pilanesburg.
