The by-election is a litmus test for ANC support in the area. ANC NEC member Malusi Gigaba spent the day wooing voters and listening to their complaints. The demand for better services has triggered several violent protests in the area.
Gigaba urged residents to exercise their right to vote. He said the ANC candidate was elected fairly.
“Ward councillors in my opinion have the most difficult job of anybody. They have not only to answer to people on the ground, it is often even more difficult than municipal managers,” says Gigaba.
Candidates of five parties will battle it out. The DA says it is optimistic that it will win the ward. Seventeen thousand registered voters will have the final say.
The ward became vacant after the recent death of the ANC councilor.
