Kenyan voters will today nominate people for political positions including those of MPs, governors and senators. This comes ahead of elections in March.

Security has been heightened across the country ahead of the nominations, especially in areas that have been identified as hotspots.

The Inspector General of Police says police will use today's exercise as a litmus test of how they will handle elections. Police came under attack after the 2007/8 Post Election Violence for failing to contain the violence that left more than 1 000 people dead.

The nominations are a big political exercise for parties. The Kenyan government has ordered all public schools closed so that schools can be used as polling stations for the parties.

In total each party will be required by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to submit 1 882 names representing those who will vie for various positions including Members of Parliament, Governors , senators, women representatives among others.

The challenge for the party leaders will be to ensure that the lists submitted represent balance in various aspects including gender, marginalised communities and youth.

Meanwhile, Civil Society activists in Kenya have held a mock burial for Kenyan lawmakers outside the Kenyan Parliament. The activists say the Members of Parliament, who are among the world's highest paid, perpetuate corruption and spend the better part of their five year terms plotting how to increase their salaries.
