National Assembly Speaker, Baleka Mbete, welcomed former Eskom Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Brian Molefe, as a new Member of Parliament (MP) on Thursday afternoon in the House's sitting.

Molefe was sworn-in on Thursday morning in the Speaker’s office.

He immediately attended the African National Congress (ANC) caucus where he was formally welcomed.

Acting ANC Caucus spokesperson Nonceba Mhlawuli explains, “The ANC welcomes comrade Brian Molefe as a Member of Parliament. He was welcomed today at the caucus and he attended the caucus and the ANC formally welcomed him as a Member of Parliament."

Parliament had earlier said that Molefe would fill a vacancy on the North West list of African National Congress (ANC) members of Parliament.

The ANC Youth League had also said Molefe would be the ideal candidate to replace Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

The League in the province has been calling on President Jacob Zuma to axe Gordhan - accusing him of serving the interests of white monopoly capital and being a stumbling block to radical economic transformation.

Molefe resigned as Eskom CEO last year after he was implicated in the former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s State of Capture Report.

Here are a few reactions from users on Social Media regarding Molefe's appointment as MP:
