Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, has not as yet accepted or responded to the resignation of Cardinal Wilfred Napier.
Napier has resigned as the Archbishop of Durban because he has turned 75 and the church's law stipulates this as the age when an archbishop should resign.
Spokesperson for the Southern African Catholic Bishops' Conference, Father Similo Mngadi, says Napier will continue to work until the Pope appoints a replacement as Archbishop of Durban.
“Definitely the Pope will not leave the diocese without a leader, it could take even two years.”
“He will appoint the Archbishop of Durban this time because a Cardinal actually is a Pope's advisor so he can choose an Archbishop of Durban as anyone else and maybe decide to choose another bishop in the country or archbishop as a cardinal or even not choose anyone,” says Mngadi.
