A new survey shows that for every suicide there are 20 attempts by young South Africans. The Durban Para-suicide study says up to one-third of all attempted suicides seen in hospitals involve children and adolescents.
The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) has developed a strategy for suicide prevention.
"The South African Depression and Anxiety Group are taking this week to be teen suicide prevention week to raise awareness about the symptoms of depression and suicide," says the Group's Cassey Chambers.
Chambers says that this is to try and prevent teens from taking their own lives in South Africa as 9.5% of all teen deaths are due to suicide. "Over 20% of teens have considered committing suicide so it is really important that this year we focus on getting teenagers help if they are feeling depressed, as soon as possible."
