Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) general-secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has rejected suggestions that the labour federation is fast losing members in the wake of ongoing strikes in mines.

This, after a convoy of cars, belonging to a delegation of Cosatu and National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) representatives, was pelted with stones at the Vaal Reef mine in Orkney, yesterday.

The angry workers also prevented the delegation from addressing their colleagues who were trapped inside the mine hostels.

Vavi has vowed to lay charges of intimidation against the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), whose members he accuses of intimidation.

"Please understand that this is not about workers rejecting Cosatu or the NUM , this is about a small gang of thugs who decide that in order for them to continue to have an influence, we must not be heard giving workers a report back about what is happening in the negotiations," says Vavi.
