The National Union of Mineworker’s (NUM) shop steward who was stabbed to death in Marikana has been laid to rest in Bizana, in the Eastern Cape.
Dumisani Mthinti's body was discovered a week after the 34 mine workers died in a hail of police bullets. His body was found 300m from the koppie. The 51-year-old rock-driller had been hacked to death.
Today, the bread winner was lauded for his leadership skills. "We mourn for his wife and children that he left behind. They have not used all of the funds made available for the funeral. They kept some of the money to look after the family after the funeral,” says the family spokesperson, Mboniso Ndende.
Lonmin has placed Mthinthi's children in an education trust.
NUM has called on government to facilitate peace among labour unions. NUM President, Senzeni Sokwana, says that NUM is happy about the salary increases at Lonmin but regrets that it came at the cost of the blood of the workers who have died.
