Minister Joe Maswanganyi has called on the public to use public transport during Transport month in October  in an effort to reduce traffic congestion.

Maswanganyi says it's safe to use public transport even though there are challenges. He says the government is doing all in its power to reduce road fatalities in the country.

Maswanganyi spoke to the SABC at the launch of Transport Month in Ekurhuleni. "Public transport in  South Africa is safe. There are challenges with metro rail we are attending to them we are having a manufacturing program here in Nigel where we are going to manufacture 580 trains. taxis carries 68% of commuters in South Africa. If a taxi doesn't have an operating permit we take it off the road. That is our principle we don't compromise on safety."
