A study into violence and intimidation against councillors and municipal managers has found that female councillors receive more threats. 66% of councillors surveyed reported being threatened.

The study has also found a systemic culture of violence and intimidation in South African society which threatens democracy.

The findings were released by the South African Local Government Association in Sandton.

“But one noteworthy issue is the extent to which there even is a gender bias where women councillors are particularly intimidated now. Not only is this a threat to our lives as councillors, but it is an affront to democracy itself for many of us will not see it as worthy to be a councillor if their lives are at risk,” says Salga President Parks Tau.
