Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale has laid wreaths at the graves of several ANC veterans and struggle heroes in Port Elizabeth. Sexwale said he had been invited by the Nelson Mandela Bay metro's mayor to lay the wreaths, as part of Nelson Mandela's birthday celebrations this month.
Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile was not present when Sexwale laid wreaths at the graves of ANC greats such as Raymond Mhlaba, Govan Mbeki and the PEBCO Three - but the ANC Regional Head Nceba Faku was there.
The two have been at loggerheads for months over the running of the metro and the party. There has been speculation that the wreath-laying was postponed yesterday because Sexwale got involved in the tussle.
However, the minister denied this, saying he had confidence in local ANC leadership. "As for the cancellation yesterday, it was purely due to logistical reasons," says Sexwale.
Last night, during a speech to honour Mandela, Sexwale said today's leaders could learn a lot from the example set by Mandela. Sexwale is believed to be one of the front-runners for the leadership of the ANC and the presidency.
